The Sparkle Box Review

Recently, I received a delightful children's picture book to review called The Sparkle Box, which was written by Jill Hardie and illustrated by Christine Kornacki.  Subtitled, "A gift with the power to change Christmas," The Sparkle Box uses the fictional story of a young boy, Sam, and his family preparing for Christmas to present the idea of a new Christmas tradition--a Sparkle Box as a gift for Jesus.  Sam's parent tell him that they will open the Sparkle Box together, but they need to fill it first.  Each day, he asks his parents if they put something in the Sparkle Box, and they tell him when they have, but not what they have.  On Christmas morning, the family opens the box (their present to Jesus) together, and Sam is reminded of the true meaning of Christmas. 

The pros:  This book is well written, and beautifully illustrated.  My children enjoyed the story and the concept SO much that they immediately asked if we could put together our own Sparkle Box (each book comes with one) and begin filling it.  I love that it focused them on doing and giving for Jesus, and not on the receiving for themselves.  I definitely see us incorporating the Sparkle Box tradition into our Christmas celebrations. 

The cons:  None!
