A penny saved...

Somewhere around child #4, shopping with coupons just stopped happening. I always justify our newspaper subscription with the thought that if I just save $1 a week with coupons from the paper, we break even with the subscription. But alas, now more often than not the coupons just get pitched untouched. Well, this evening I decided to go through the pile of coupons I had pulled out intending to use and also go through my coupon organizer to throw away expired coupons...most of them expired in Nov/Dec. 2007. Yep! It really has been a while. Sadly, I know I've bought most of the things I had coupons for, but sometimes the release of the mental stress of having one more "to-do" to manage is worth a few dollars saved. But now with the price of gas hovering at $4 a gallon, I think I'll be coupon clipping again :-).
But hey, at least I can just throw out the ones for diapers. Sari has really embraced potty training (actually, she trained herself...I had nothing to do with it...that's the beauty of waiting until the child is ready). She never even wets the bed. I'm so proud of her!

I've gone through that cycle with the coupons too. Right now I don't use them.

Looks like you started with the "mission organization". Good for you. I sorted out the outdoor toy box today (scary dirty in there).

Ahh,the coupons. The nemesis of every Mom who knows she should but somehow just doesn't. What is the problem with those things? I've tried everything to do it. Sigh. The good thing though is that I do not shop anymore at Publix, only Walmart for the bulk of my groceries so I figure I am already saving way more than coupons would save me. Ocassionally I will just run through Publix to stock up on all their Buy one get one frees.
I'm confused at why anyone really wanting to save money would shop at Publix over Walmart. Iv'e never heard a good explanation other than "I can't shop there, it makes me crazy.~
I am RIGHT with you ont he potty training. Way to go Sari! I trained all of mine just like that too and never had a single issue or accident. Just wait and they will do it!

Walmart DOES make me crazy. I think I have sensory problems the moment I walk through their dirty doors. I truly spend more if I shop at walmart because of all the extras publix doesn't have. I also like the deli at P versus walmart. However I must concede that when the budget has been tight, as in you have 50.00 to shop this week, It goes much further at wally world...

Funny. It was after child #4 was born that I started using coupons. Before that it wasn't that big of a deal to me. We get excited when we get our paper on Sundays because we try to see how well we can save. The kids cut the coupons, I go through sale ads, then we shop Sunday evening. I am one who only shops at Publix because like Leisa said it drives me crazy too, plus I am really one for fair labor practices and Walmart does not meet that criteria. I do save money but it is because I use coupons and buy what is on sale. My best saving week was $97. On average it is around $45-50, around $20 in coupons and the rest with in store savings. I buy some produce there but otherwise I grow my own and buy from a local produce stand or a local farmer.
Get the kids involved. It is a great lesson for them too.

I used to do pretty well using coupons. Now, most of what I buy doesn't come with coupons. So....I buy what generics I can, and BOGO's and probably do about the same. It's an adventurous challenge to always try and improve upon the budget, I guess. : )
